Our Key People

Founding Medical Director Dr. Barry White, MB.BS Ph.C

Dr Barry White is the founding Medical Director of the National Hair Institute. He graduated as a pharmacist in 1957 and went on to medical studies in 1961. He completed his MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery), and undertook postgraduate studies in Morbid Anatomy and Histopathology.

While he was working as a general practitioner, Dr White became increasingly interested in the problem of hair loss, its causes and corrective procedures. He felt that by helping people to surgically restore a natural head of hair, he could help them improve their quality of life.

In 1978 Dr. White became interested in the field of hair transplantation and as a result, undertook a course of tuition from a leading hair transplant surgeon in Sydney to venture into the field. Later that following year he started working for a commercial transplant clinic in Melbourne.

In 1982 Dr. White was a founding member of the Australasian Society of Hair Restoration Surgery and today this board includes Australia's best transplant surgeons.

Over the years Dr. White progressed through a steep learning curve but became increasingly aware of the limitations of the methods in practice. As a result he decided that he must look overseas for more sophisticated techniques.

Hair transplantation has posed many aesthetic challenges and over the years he has worked closely with leading physicians in Austria, Canada, Munich, Sydney & United States in finding the ultimate in hair transplanting.

In 1996 Dr. White learnt the latest techniques with leading Canadian Doctor, David Seager (who is internationally recognised as a leading innovator in the field of hair transplantation).

The current techniques were implemented at the National Hair Institute head office in Melbourne, 1996. To date these techniques have proven very successful in restoring not only hair but also the confidence of today's hair loss sufferers.

Dr White has over 40 years experience in the medical field and 26 years experience in the hair restoration field. He is a former President of the Australasian Society of Hair Restoration Society and is also an active member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. Dr. White is also an active member of the Australasian College Of Cosmetic Surgery.

In 1996 Dr White travelled to Toronto Canada and spent time with Dr Seager to learn the technique of dissecting grafts with the Binocular Dissecting Microscope. This technique was instituted in the latter part of 1996 and we began getting much better growth from each procedure. Since 1996 every graft prepared by NHI has been by using this method.

In 1998 Dr White went again to Dr Seager to have his own hair transplant done. This was completed using a dense packing technique and this was incorporated into the National Hair Institute procedure following his return. The advantages of this process are that we are to get better growth than previously because we are using smaller recipient holes for a better fit between graft and host and also we were able to achieve much greater density in one procedure.

In 2002 Dr White began an intensive investigation and change of systems at NHI to attain ISO 9002 certification. This certification was achieved in 2003 and ensures that all staff follow set procedures to ensure consistent outcomes for our patients.

Clinic Director Marcus White

Dr White is partnered in the Practice by his son, Marcus White. Marcus has been with the National Hair Institute since 1994 and has worked extensively with its many clients and acts as Patient Advisor.

Marcus frequently represents the National Hair Institute's expertise at seminars around the world.

Theatre Technicians

NHI staffs a team of 5 full-time hair transplant technicians.

All technicians have received lengthy and comprehensive training in all facets of their job. They regularly undergo competency assessments, as well as ongoing training and up-skilling as required, eg first-aid training. This has also included participation at hair transplant technician programmes and seminars at ISHRS annual conferences, as well as training at hair restoration centres internationally.

Most of our technicians have been working at NHI for 7 to 10 years, and as such are a highly experienced and dedicated team of professionals.
