FUG & FUE Combination

FUG & FUE Combination

Recently, the National Hair Institute achieved another milestone in hair restoration by successfully transplanting over 5900 grafts in a single session. This was achieved by performing a typical strip excision as per the FUG method then additional grafts were harvested from around the donor area utilising the FUE method. The benefits of combining Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) with FUG, is that we can obtain more grafts in one operation than we would be able to with either method alone. The FUE method also enables us to access 'donor hair' from areas that are not accessible via FUG. It is obviously exciting to be involved in this type of procedure, which is a first in Australia. Additionally it has not been adopted extensively overseas, so it is a nice feeling to be leading the way on new avenues for hair transplantation surgery in the world.

Erken Asiks Hair Transplant Procedure

By choosing to undertake a procedure as large as this- over 5944 Follicular Unit Grafts (FUG), we were able to transplant a much larger area at a much higher density than we would be able to do normally. In this patient's case, and potentially for others, it may mean getting 'full' coverage of their affected balding area in one procedure (rather than two or three, if their affected area is large). This procedure, given its size and that it was our first of its type, required the patient to be in the clinic for 17 hours. Actual surgery time was probably around 13 hours. Obviously this requires a relaxed and understanding patient. The patient tolerated the procedure well, given its duration. Towards the end, he had some muscular discomfort from sitting still for so long, and was obviously a bit tired. Overall he tolerated the surgery very well. To perform this type of surgery several things are required in terms of patient selection. Firstly, a patient's expectations need to be realistic. Secondly, they need to be of a relaxed and tolerant demeanour. In terms of the surgical attributes they require good 'donor' density and flexibility. Lastly, they need to be prepared for the back and sides of their head to be shaved or clippered. The procedure is not suitable for everyone. Obviously this type of surgery requires a highly dedicated and professional team of doctors and surgical assistants. We would be looking to assess the final results of this procedure about 14-18 months after surgery. Please come back for further updates on Erken's progress.
