Hairpieces and Wigs

Hairpieces and wigs

These are a temporary solution to hair loss. They are made from human or synthetic strands and are usually stuck to the scalp with glue or double-sided sticky tape.
Wigs are offered by many well known hair loss clinics and are sold to prospects as “a non-surgical procedure”. The term “wig” is never used. The common name given to the item is a “membrane, system, unit or a hair graft.”
A “System” needs to be re-attached to the scalp at least once per month by the clinic and is usually replaced every 4-12 months due to natural wear and tear.
The maintenance and replacement costs of wigs usually range between $4000 to $5000 per year, every year. Over the long term this can add up to a substantial amount of money and more than any other treatment method available.
Refer here for a better understanding of how non-surgical hair replacements are sold to people.

Lotions, potions and other topical treatments

Hair TonicOil, dandruff or poor circulation do not cause balding, therefore treating these conditions will not stop or reverse hair loss, nor will the application of nutrients to your scalp. While some topical non-drug solutions may improve appearance they can do nothing to prevent hair loss or make strands grow back.
Special shampoos, mysterious lotions and ampoules of expensive solutions are still marketed to baldness sufferers making claims that cannot be substantiated, in spite of the fact that such claims are prohibited by law. These products are generally sold in chemists and health food stores. It is the opinion of NHI that you should only ever consider using products that can prove their claims in a clinical trial. If their claims cannot be substantiated in a scientific study then you would most likely be wasting your money.

Cosmetic concealers

There are a number of products available; Toppik and Couvre are just two of these that can provide the appearance of a fuller head of hair.
Toppik is an electrostatically charged fibre that adheres to areas of thinning strands. It sprinkles on easily and does not run or stain and is excellent for use post-operatively for concealing any evidence of a procedure.
Couvre is a scalp colourant, which can be used to reduce the contrast between hair and skin colour thereby reducing the appearance of hair loss. Both products can be effective in reducing the appearance of hair loss, but they will help strands grow or stop any further loss.

Scalp reductions and flaps

Scalp reduction is used to reduce the area of bald skin, usually from the top or the back of the head. An area of skin is removed and the gap is then closed (sutured).
Scalp lifts and tissue expansions are variations of this procedure. A related procedure is to take hair-bearing skin from one area of the head and place it in a bald area, usually on the top of the head. We list these techniques for the sake of educating, but the National Hair Institute neither recommends, nor performs these procedures.
