  Pharmaceutical Options

The following two prescription medications are the only ones that have proven their efficacy in treating hair loss in stringent clinical trials. Any other preparations that imply renewed hair growth should be substantiated by the user.

 Rogaine

Rogaine Rogaine is for use by men and women. It consists of a 2% or 5% Minoxidil topical solution applied directly to the scalp. It must be applied to dry hair twice each day and in most cases results will take up to a year. Regaine must be used continually to maintain any benefits. Cessation of treatment will result in hair returning to its previous state within 2-4 months.

Possible side effects include itching, scaling and irritation of the treated area.

* Rogaine - Trademark of Upjohn and proprietary name of Minoxidil

 Propecia

PropeciaPropecia is for male use only. It is a pill taken orally once per day and contains a 1mg dose of Finasteride. Propecia works by inhibiting the production of a male hormone that contributes to hair loss. In clinical trials Propecia has been shown to stop hair loss for some people and in some cases promote hair growth in the crown and mid scalp region. It is not effective for frontal hair loss. As with Rogaine, treatment must be continued indefinitely and cessation of therapy will result in hair loss continuing at the pre-medication rate. Efficacy in men over the age of 41 years has not been established.
Possible side effects include reduced sex drive and erectile dysfunction.

**Propecia - Trademark of Merck Sharp and Dohme and proprietary name of Finasteride.

The National Hair Institute has had a great deal of experience with both these medications and can advise of their suitability on their own or in conjunction with a hair transplant procedure during your consultation. Propecia** and Rogaine* are of no benefit to people who are bald.
