Treatment Options

Hairpieces and wigs

Hairpieces and Wigs Hairpieces or wigs can provide a temporary solution to hair loss. They are made from human or synthetic hair, and they can be held in place by a variety of methods.

However, they can cost from $1,000 to $5,000, and they are subject to wear and tear. They need to be re-attached every month, at a cost of up to $100 a month. Over a longer period, this cost can mount to a very high figure.

Lotions, potions and other topical treatments

Oil, dandruff or poor circulation do not cause hair loss, therefore treating these conditions will not stop or reverse hair loss, nor will the application of nutrients to your scalp. While some topical non-drug solutions may improve the appearance of your hair they can do nothing to prevent hair loss or make your hair grow back.

Special shampoos, mysterious lotions and ampoules of expensive solutions are still marketed to hair loss sufferers making claims that cannot be substantiated, in spite of the fact that such claims are prohibited by law. These products are generally sold in chemists and health food stores. It is the opinion of the National Hair Institute that you should only ever consider using products that can prove their claims in a clinical trial. If their claims cannot be substantiated in a clinical trial then you would most likely be wasting your money.

Cosmetic concealers

There are a number of products available; Toppik and Couvre are just two of these that can provide the appearance of a fuller head of hair.

Toppik is an electrostatically charged fibre that adheres to areas of thinning hair. It sprinkles on easily and does not run or stain and is excellent for use post-operatively for concealing any evidence of a procedure.

Couvre is a scalp colourant, which can be used to reduce the contrast between hair and skin colour thereby reducing the appearance of hair loss. Both products can be effective in reducing the appearance of hair loss, but they will not grow hair or stop any further loss.

Scalp reductions and flaps

Scalp reduction is used to reduce the area of bald skin, usually from the top or the back of the head. An area of skin is removed and the gap is then closed (sutured).

Scalp lifts and tissue expansions are variations of this procedure. A related procedure is to take hair-bearing skin from one area of the head and place it in a bald area, usually on the top of the head. We list these techniques for the sake of educating, but the National Hair Institute neither recommends, nor performs these procedures.

Laser hair transplantation

Laser assisted hair transplantation has been commercially available for some years now. In that time the National Hair Institute has been closely monitoring the results achieved by doctors in Australia and around the world.

The laser is used to make the recipient holes in the front, top and crown where the grafts are to be placed. The laser burns a hole in the recipient tissue, effectively cauterizing the skin, subsequently cutting the blood supply to an area that requires blood to assist the healing process. Newer lasers are now being evaluated and to date the results do not compare to those that are currently available using the Follicular Unit Grafting Method.
